Cointreau is a drink with pedigree and heritage. Produced in a recipe that has remained unchanged for over 150 years, Cointreau liqueur has a unique, refreshing taste with great fruit intensity. Cointreau liqueur is a blend of orange peels from Spain and the caribbean. The caribbean peels are bitter but the Spanish peels are sweet. This combo creates an intense and bittersweet orange flavor, with a hint of spice. The sundried orange peels are macerated and distilled with a crystal clear spirit. This is done to extract every last drop of the natural essential oils that give Cointreau liqueur its aromatic scent. Cointreau, was originally created by Edouard Cointreau in 1875 under the brand created by his father, EdouardJean and uncle, Adolphe Cointreau, famous confectioners who had established a distillery to create spirits using local fruits. It is an orange-flavoured liqueur and because of this, it is often served with a slice of orange. The word 'sec' means dry in French so this implies it is a very dry alcoholic drink. Some of the most famous brands are Cointreau, Grand Marnier and Curacao. It combines well with mixers to add extra flavour to the taste. A good liqueur brand will have a smooth taste that can mix well to make cocktails. The alcohol percentage is rather high so if you drink it neat, be sure to pace yourself in order to prevent a hangover.
